The first official carbon landfill can be created at the Chernogorsky section of SUEK-Khakassia LLC, whose productivity improvement project is included in the Yenisei Siberia CIP. The research is conducted under the auspices of the world-class scientific and educational center "Yenisei Siberia".

The dumps of the coal mine are gradually turning into a forest area, thereby forming carbon networks that absorb carbon dioxide. Scientists are monitoring how the phytomass develops and the air is purified. Experts have been collecting scientific material at the Chernogorsky mine for more than two years and are already talking about the positive effect of reclaimed landfills on atmospheric air. For example, elm, aspen, birch, poplar and Scots pine are showing record growth.

"Trees actively capture carbon dioxide in the dumps of coal mines, which means that carbon farms can be created here, which can affect the climate," said Elena Zhukova, associate professor of Biology at N.F. Katanov Khakass State University.

According to experts, the possible creation of a carbon landfill at the Chernogorsky section is an additional effect of the new method of biological remediation and another evidence of its environmental effectiveness.

"The innovative reclamation method developed by scientists, implemented in the dumps of the Chernogorsky section, has allowed the formation of powerful vegetation that helps protect land from erosion and helps form a full–fledged ecosystem," said Natalia Petrova, environmental engineer at the Chernogorsky section of SUEK-Khakassia.

The activities of the Yenisei Siberia Scientific and Educational Center are aimed at improving the environmental situation in Russia and decarbonizing industry. The participants of the REC include 28 scientific and educational organizations and enterprises of the real sector of the economy.
