The 50th anniversary scientific research expedition of Rosneft has started in the north of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. The aim is to determine the ice and hydrometeorological conditions of operation of one of the key facilities of the Vostok Oil project – the port of North Bay.
The expedition was organized by the Arctic Scientific Center of the Company together with the Innopraktika company. Field research is carried out by specialists of the Marine Research Center of Lomonosov Moscow State University.
The work began with observations of the formation of the ice cover: scientists record the characteristic processes of ice formation, conduct studies of smooth ice, formed hummocks, ridges and stamukhs, determine the shapes, age, morphometric properties and physico-mechanical characteristics of ice formations. An indenter probe is used to measure ice strength, thermal pumps with salinity sensors and data transmission via a satellite system are used for temperature measurements, radio beacons are used to measure drift dynamics, and acoustic Doppler profilers are used to measure the speed and direction of subglacial currents. Satellite monitoring of ice conditions will be carried out throughout the expedition: scientists will analyze current processes and summarize observation materials using archives from previous years.
This is the first time such large-scale research involving a large number of specialists and technical resources has been conducted in this area. The relevance of the work is due to the increasing flow of ships in the northern part of the Yenisei Bay. The expedition will last until the beginning of summer.
The data obtained will become the basis for planning and organizing a system for safe and efficient transportation of hydrocarbons in the waters of the Severn Bay and the northern part of the Yenisei Bay.
