Sergey Brilev, President of the Global Energy Association, Mikhail Kotyukov, Governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, and Rae Kwon Chung, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, announced the winners of the prestigious Global Energy industry award. Three scientists from Russia, the USA and China became laureates. The ceremony took place at the office of RusHydro and became the first large-scale international event of the company after the completion of the move from Moscow to Krasnoyarsk. The relocation took place in accordance with the instructions of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

09.07.2025

The event brought together leading experts in the field of energy, government officials, the scientific community and international journalists. Among the nominees are 15 scientists from eight countries: Australia, Great Britain, Italy, China, Russia, USA, Chile and Switzerland.

The Global Energy Award was founded in 2003, and 53 researchers from 16 countries have been awarded during its existence. This is one of the most prestigious awards in the energy industry. It is awarded for outstanding scientific achievements and innovative developments that contribute to the sustainable use of resources and reduce the impact of energy on the environment. The winners are selected by an international committee consisting of leading energy experts from different countries. In 2025, the competition received 90 applications from 44 countries representing all six continents.

Sergey Brilev, President of the Global Energy Association: "We have an amazing energy balance in our country. And the Krasnoyarsk Territory is an ideal venue for the Global Energy Award – there are energy solutions here that the world can only dream of. Our nominations are "Traditional energy" and "Non-traditional energy", and in the Krasnoyarsk territory it is possible to combine practice and science. Scientists are able to find a common professional language, regardless of the geopolitical situation. It is no coincidence that representatives from Europe and North America have returned to the nominees this year, and the geography of applications has expanded, including at the expense of scientists from the countries of the Global South."

In 2025, the award was presented in three nominations. In the category "Traditional Energy", the winner was the head of the Scientific Research Institute of High-Voltage Technologies, Professor of Jinliang He University from China for the development of advanced technologies for the transmission of ultra- and ultra-high voltage electricity. His work is aimed at improving the reliability and efficiency of energy systems, which contributes to environmental friendliness and energy availability. For the first time in the more than 20-year history of the award, Yu Huang, a female professor and head of the Department at the University of California at Los Angeles, became the winner in the Non-Traditional Energy category. She was awarded for her groundbreaking discoveries in the field of fuel cell catalysts that accelerate the global energy transition. The winner in the category "New Energy Applications" was Vladislav Khomich, Scientific Director of the Institute of Electrophysics and Electric Power Engineering of the Russian Academy of Sciences, for his outstanding contribution to the development of plasma technologies and pulsed energy. His research is of great importance for fundamental science and practical applications in the energy sector.

During the association's work in the region, the guests visited the sights of the region, the Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric power station, industrial enterprises, met with energy experts and participants in the "We are Professionals" shift at the Biryusa TIM.

Mikhail Kotyukov, Governor of the Krasnoyarsk Territory: "The Krasnoyarsk Territory is an industrially developed region, and the energy sector is fundamentally important to us. Great attention is paid to the development of the industry: We need energy for industry, housing construction, and the conversion of the raw materials we have today. In addition, the topic of energy development is studied in detail in our universities and schools – it is important to attract young people who are ready to devote themselves to this field professionally. The Krasnoyarsk Territory applied to host the ceremony of announcing the laureates, a lot of interesting ideas and projects were presented by the nominees of the Global Energy Award - and this is a great educational work. I also see the interest of the international jury in studying the Krasnoyarsk Territory, and high–level guests want to return to us, which is wonderful."

The event was supported by the Administration of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Yenisei Siberia Development Corporation, Norilsk Nickel, RusHydro, JSC Electrochemical Plant Production Association and FSUE Rosatom Mining and Chemical Combine.

The Global Energy Award ceremony for the 2025 laureates will take place in autumn in Moscow, at the Russian Energy Week International Forum.
